Eye microsurgery and Laser Centre was started in 1990 at YMCA Building Tiruvalla by Dr. Verghese Joseph and Dr. Amita Verghese, both postgraduates from prestigious Delhi University. Their aim was to provide comprehensive eye care to the people. The doctors were well trained in Cataract Surgery and IOL implantation, and also in Retinal and Vitreous Surgery and Retinal Lasers. About 40,000 patients were examined in 2006 and 1100 patients operated for all types of major eye diseases. In year 2006, 20 free eye camps were conducted and 200 patients were operated free of cost. They have also started a regular free OPD for these patients providing free medications and consultation. EMLC have received the accreditation from the National Board of Examinations New Delhi, Ministry of Health and Education, for conducting the DNB course in ophthalmology for 2 primary and 2 DO candidates from Feb 2007
